Matt giles

Matt has had a busy 2008 season with several races both --- ultra and non-ultra distances. His crowning achievement was finishing second in the 100 km Anglo Celtic Place in a time of 7:28:5. This time the 2nd fastest in UK over the 100 km distance.

He also won the Calderdale Hike (37 Miles) in 5:24, Wuthering Hike (33 Miles) 4:46:3 and finished second as the Gloucester 20 Mile run in 1:56:30 and the Trollers Trot in 3:23.

In 2009, Matt is going to planning on doing longer trail races. He has been playing with the idea of doing the Paddy Buckley Round. Running well at the 100 km Commonwealth Championship is also a very high goal for this year.

Views on the Commonwealth Championships…

Nadeem Khan (NK): What are your thoughts on running in the Commonwealth Series?

Matt Giles (MK): This is an extremely exciting opportunity.  As an ultra distance athlete I am used to competing in low key events.  It’s great that ultra distance running is becoming more widely recognized and now has this high level competition.

NK: How will this race be different from your other international races?

MK: I think there will be a stronger team spirit competing against the other Commonwealth nations.

NK: The thing you are most looking forward to at the Championships…

MK: Having the opportunity to win Commonwealth medals and represent my country  home ground in such a beautiful location.

Get to know Matt

NK: Most memorable athletic moment…

MK: Completing the Grand Union Canal Race.  It is a 145mile race along the tow paths from Birmingham to London.  I haven’t found anything as tough as that was yet.

NK: If you were not a runner, you would be…

MK: Fat

NK: Your biggest supporter in your running career…

MK: Cath, my wife.  I couldn’t run at this level without her support.  She puts up with my grumpiness when I’m injured and lets me out for weekends of running.

NK: Who is your first call after a major race?

MK: My biggest supporter.

NK: If you could train with a marathon celebrity, who would you pick?

MK: Paula
